Despite the wintry weather the girls managed to play on Saturday in a re match against Poppleton. The slightly smaller pitch suited them and after lasts week gme they were prepared for us with a narrow 3 man defence. Like last week we had lots of pressure and were lively on the break with Jess, Ella and Saffy all carrying the ball well. However, Poppleton passed the ball nicely and had some good attacks which Lizzie Olivia and Charlotte M did really well to repel. Towards the end of the first half we came under pressure again and lizzie saved well but the rebound fell to Poppleton and we found ourselves 1-0 down at half time.
In true Alex Ferguson style the coach found some inspirational words at the break and the girls doubled their efforts. Vicky began threatening the goal and Ella provided a number of long range shots. One of these brought our equaliser when it deflected in off a defender. The rest of the game was played with plenty of nervous energy as both teams tried to find a winner. Finally we had some luck and Saffy popped up in front of goal to score with the last kick. Really well played girls, we look like a good footballing team and on this form we can beat anybody.
In the second game we again looked strong with Olivia in midfield using her magic left boot to great purpose. Molly and Lizzie made sure that Saffy and Ella in goal had virtually nothing to do while Georgie and Sophie combined very effectively in midfield and Attack. Rose had a superb game up front and came close to scoring in a game of few chances. The parents on the touchline were celebrating when Olivias left foot scorcher seemed goalbound but a late deflection saw it hit the post and the game remained scoreless. As stated earlier, the girls played some good passing football and are going from strength to strength.
As usual thanks to all the parents for braving the cold and supporting so well and a special thanks to the twins and their Mum for the bag backing and for Dave who cycled from home to Asda just to help out - much appreciated folks!
Next week we're at home to Fulford 10.00 kick off - Gooo Scorchers!
