Last Saturday the Scorchers took on Brooklyn in a really competetive game at the Cricket Club.
With the cameras rolling (Many Thanks Mark) there was an air of excitement as the game kicked off with Beth captaining the team for the first time this season. From the start the Scorchers passed the ball around well and took the game to Brooklyn, Niamh, Ella and Emma all had shots blocked or saved as Brooklyn defended really effectively. With Olivia playing a holding midfield role in front of Charlotte B amd Beth the Scorchers looked fairly solid with Brooklyn being fairly limited in attack, that said Amelia had to make one fantastic save from a really powerful shot. Half time nil, nil. The question at half time was how to break down the Brooklyn defence, Olivia had a slight pull but felt she could continue at left back, so we moved Charlotte up in to midfield on the left, with a simple message to pass the ball better/quicker and look for simple one/two's or a maisy run to beat the defence.
Within minutes of the start Scorchers had got the goal, Emma receiving the ball on the edge of the box got the ball past the defender and smashed the ball home. Scorchers continued to have the better of the play other than a couple of penalty area scrambles just getting the ball away from danger. As the game went in the last few minutes Olivia came off as a precaution and the Scorchers finished with 6 players. However they still kept control of the game and finished worthy winners. Charlotte B got girl of the game, for her flexibility in both defence and midfield, almost scoring with a shot just past the right hand post.
Wasp Stops Play!!!?
In the friendly, we saw something very unusual as Ella (great to volunteer in goal) came sprinting off the pitch chased by a very angry wasp!! We have seen dogs stop play, toddlers stop play but wasps in November!!!!! Rebecca spotted that it was the bright yellow GK top that was the problem, so a quick swap and we were off. The Scorchers again took the game to Brooklyn, who really battled to stay in the game. Amelia now in attack had several good chances but couldnt quite score (but she will!!!!) so as the team applied some pressure it was Emma who netted a further 2 goals to win the friendly match too. Two great games thanks to Brooklyn who made them really close matches and a special thanks to debutant referee Vince who steped in to the breech!! Lets hope the camera picked up a very energetic jump/dodge/turn to avoid the ball that he performed to cheers from the crowd!!! Finally thanks to all the parents who helped us set up the pitch. See you in the morning. Mike and Rebecca
