U14's Scotton Scorchers 3 v Heworth 0

The U14s commenced their Cup run today by welcoming Heworth to a sunny Percy field.

With a starting line-up of Georgia, Georgie, Katy, Becky C, Becky S, Ellie, Hannah,Riah and Jayde, Scotton immediately took the game to Heworth and within minutes were targeting their opponent's goal with shots from Georgie and Georgia.

Heworth managed to weather this period and then broke out to attack in their turn, moving the ball around well and getting close enough to send a shot wide of one of Scotton's posts. Though Scotton quickly responded (a pass from Georgie sending Katy racing down the field) possession changed once again and Heworth pressed forward to gain a corner. However the Scorchers' defence held firm and Scotton went back on the attack - Katy suddenly breaking free with just the keeper to beat, only to be brought down by a push in the back. Ellie then stepped forward to take the subsequent free kick, delivering a cracking shot which the keeper did well to get a hand to, but which was simply too strong to be stopped: 1-0.

The whole of the first half was played at a blistering pace by both teams (Scotton making one substitution part-way through, with Ciara coming on for Becky C) but the score remained at 1-0 as the whistle blew for half-time.

As usual some changes were made during the break - Jayde coming off temporarily, Riah going into goal and Becky C coming back on.

The second half started much as the first with play flowing up and down the pitch, but with Scotton gradually building the pressure on Heworth. First a shot from Georgia (who had to leave the field shortly after due to an injury) went just over the bar, then a strike from Jayde forced a good save from the keeper. Finally a pass from Georgie again found Katy, who sprinted away from three defenders and finished with a super shot that beat the goalie: 2-0.

Though Heworth continued to fight back and looked capable of getting a goal, Scotton were now playing with confidence and running repeatedly at the Heworth defence: First a good ball from Becky C set Georgie off to have a shot, then Katy nearly broke free again, and finally a lovely run from Becky S on the right culminated in a great cross which allowed Jayde to put the ball neatly away: 3-0.

The final whistle blew a couple of minutes later, ending another energetic and entertaining encounter between these two teams.
