Scorchers GU11 get off to a winning start in first league game against Killinghall Nomads 5-2

The U11 squad’s season got off to a belated start after a series of postponements to record a deserved 5-2 victory against Killinghall Nomads.

We started very slowly and conceded a disappointing goal after only a couple of minutes.   After this we seemed to wake up and stated to play some good football.   The midfield of Emily, Danni and Bella stated to dominate the middle of the park with some great passing and sharp tacking to win possession.    We gradually got back into the game and drew level when Emily hit a speculative shot from long range that caught the keeper out to make the score 1-1.   After that we pushed on with some good running off the ball from Amy to create space for the midfield to exploit.  Danni who was having a strong game in midfield hit a looping cross that caught everybody out and found its way into the back of the net to put us 2-1 up.   At the back we were looking very solid with Katie and Anya both performing well whenever Nomads threatened.  Katie in particular made a succession of well-timed challenges.  Although she was well protected by Anya and Katie in front of her on a couple of occasions  Nomads broke through and Grace once again proved why she is Scottons no1 Keeper with a couple of fine saves.   2-1 at half time.  After the break we started very brightly and were passing the ball and finding space very well. One such good move resulting in Emily smashing in another long range effort to move us to 3-1.   Nomads were not out of the game and continued to press to get back in the match however we remained resilient and gradually got back on top.   A couple of one on ones with the Nomads keeper by Emily and Amy resulted in a couple of very good blocks from the keeper and it looked like lady luck was not favouring us at that point.  However we continued to edge the game and went further in front when some great passing from Bella to Emily and then on to Amy to slot home cleanly and made it a more comfortable 4-1.  After that we continued to push forward and Emily finished well to secure a well-deserved hatrick to put us 5-1 up. Ellie Mc, Izzy and Hannah came on for Bella, Anya and Amy half way through the second half and all slotted in really well and we continued to look solid.  We created a number of further chances but could just not get the ball in the back of the net.   Unfortuanatly we switched off towards the end and Nomads managed to bag a consolation goal at the death to finish the game 5-2.   A great start in our first game in our first year in the Harrogate Girls League!!!!!

Player of the game was Emily for her hatrick performance from midfield.

It should be noted that Nomads played a full part in a very enjoyable and competitive match played in the right spirit

In the second game Grace remained in goal with Alice, Amber,  Ellie L joining Izzy, Ellie Mc and Hannah to start the game.  The game was very tight and after going a goal down Ellie Mc equalised with a well taken goal to make it 1-1. At half time Hannah came off and Emma came on, The game continued to be very tight with chances for both sides to go in front before Nomads managed to finish making it 2-1.  Still not beaten Scorchers came back strongly to equalise again awith a good finish from Ellie Mc.  In the final moments of the game both sides appeared to be content with a deserved draw – however this was not to be as Nomads managed to find the net with what was effectively the last kick of the game.   I think all agreed that a draw would probably have been a fair result

A great start to the season with every player making a positive contribution to two really competitive games.   Also many thanks to the Nomads player’s parents and coaches for making it a really enjoyable morning.  Finally thanks to all the parents for their support during both games and especially those that stayed behind and helped taking the goals down and putting the equipment away – it’s very much appreciated.
