SATURDAY 1ST MARCH 2014
Well
what a match!
With
a few players unavailable, we rearranged our squad the best we could – Sam C in
goal, a defence of Georgina, Becky C and Molly, midfield of Natalie, Honor and
Darcy (making her debut) with Chloe up front.. Emily started as sub, following
a little ‘coming together’ with Chloe during the warm up!!
In
the true spirit of the game, Wetherby also started with 8 players – true sportsmanship!!
So,
the match commenced and Scotton started with lots of energy, a high tempo and
soon started to control the game. There was some lovely football being played,
lots of passes and everyone really taking the game to Wetherby, with Natalie
really making the right wing her own! It was end to end stuff, but Scotton’s
defence really working hard to prevent any real threat to Sam’s goal.
Eventually
a breakthrough, a great move from the Scotton midfield, putting Chloe through
on goal and she stayed cool to slot home…1-0 to Scotton.
The
goal really seemed to spur the team on and following a great attacking move,
the ball came to Darcy just on the edge of the box… right place, right time and
her looping shot hit the back of the net…. A great debut goal (even Darcy was
shocked that she’d scored)!! 2-0 to Scotton.
Emily
came on as the hard work started to show on one or two… Darcy having a
breather, after working tirelessly up and down the left wing!!
Still,
Scotton controlled the game, but Wetherby’s heads never dropped and a couple of
chances came to them… almost pulling one back but again, our defensive three
stood strong and Sam saw it past her goal for a goal kick.
Just
before the break, a strong challenge from Molly (just mistimed) lead to a Wetherby
free kick…again we held strong. Then another breakthrough… great football up
into attack, and a Wetherby defender arms raised. Penalty – which Emily put
away nicely...3-0 to Scotton. An injury to Georgina meant a few positional
changes…Darcy dropping to right back.
After
a few positive words from Chris (LUAFC Academy), Wayne and John, we started the
second half as we finished the first… high energy and more passing, possessional
football. Another ‘crunching’ tackle from Molly… the Wetherby winger really
knew Molly wasn’t easy to pass!! Becky C moved into midfield and Honor dropped
into centre back which lead to another great attacking move, and a second for
Chloe … 4-0 to Scotton! But, despite the score line, Wetherby never gave up and
still kept pushing forward.
A
fifth goal for Scotton (and second for Emily) lead to a few positional changes,
as everyone had given their all and worked their socks off… but still Wetherby
pushed and eventually a strong shot on Sam’s goal… and Wetherby pulled one
back.
And
that’s how it finished … 5-1 to Scotton!!
A
great team performance in spite of injuries and a small squad, and credit to
Wetherby for their efforts, smiling faces and playing in the true spirit of the
game!
Player
of the match: Natalie… great work, high energy and great performance!
Go
Scorchers!!
