U11 Lions - Tournament Champions!!!!
The Under 11 (Lions) went to Poppleton with high hopes after finishing 3rd in the League, runners up in the cup and narrowly missing out on winning this respective tournament last year.
The weather dampened our clothes but not our spirit as we opened up our Group A matches by a steady 2-0 win over Stamford Bridge. A back-to-back game then ensued against Brayton Belles with the result being a 3-1 victory, move of the match being brilliant one-two between Jasmine West and Ella Witty resulting in a neat finish from the left hand side.
We than had a ½ hour wait in the rain till our next game, but the girls played some of our most exciting football brushing Dunnington aside 6-0 with Cora Squire finding the net, Ebony Njie rampaging up front and a solid performance from Sophie Green at the back.
Cayton Corinthians were the next opponents but they soon crumbled as Ellie Prothero ran riot on the left hand side and Elizabeth Weatherill on the right. 3-0 flattered Cayton as chance after chance went begging. Another ½ hour wait then followed as the rain turned torrential, fortunately Team Manager Ian Green provided his new car as an air-conditioned safe haven!
Our final group game was against Kirbymoorside, the mixture of the conditions and the time lapse between games was starting to tell but fortunately the passing game that is the girls trademark came to the fore resulting in a 2-0 success.
The semi-final draw was not an easy task, Scarborough are a physically strong side and tend to dominate the midfield. This wasn’t the case though as Scotton sliced through time and time again scoring 3 with nothing in reply due to the defensive prowess of Amber Njie.
Fulford provided the opposition in the final, it was a nervy game with few clear cut chances as they wind and rain intensified. Molly Huetson was magnificent in goal reading every through ball that Fulford played and deserved yet another clean sheet. Three minutes of extra time followed and still the teams couldn’t be separated, final substitutions were made with the Penalty shoot-out in mind, however, it wasn’t needed. With 30 seconds remaining Jasmine West fired in yet another amazing corner which ricocheted off the post and a Fulford defender leaving the keeper no chance.
All in all it was a marvellous display, every single player played a huge part in the afternoon as do the parents that provide the support needed…. The first of many successes.
