U13's narrowly miss out in Poppleton
Unlike the U14's and U11's, the U13's played at Poppleton in the morning when the weather was fine, but a little chilly. As a result of there only being 7 teams on the day the 2 league format was abandoned and all 7 teams went into one league with only the top two going through to the final.
The girls started well, beating the York League champions and cup finalists Scarborough Red 1-0, a great goal being scored by Eloise, followed up by a very credible 0-0 draw against a very good York RI team.
This was followed up with a 1-0 defeat to the eventual winners Brayton, who played well against us in what was probably our worst game of the day going forward but probably one of our best at the back with some great defending being shown across the defence and midfield. Brayton were a little fortunate with their goal which Sam initially saved only to see the ball loop up and just under the bar and drop into the net but they were probably the best side that we played and deserved winners of the competition.
We followed this up with a 0-0 draw against the Harrogate league and cup winners Knaresborough Celtic, a game that we were disappointed not to get more out of as we played as well as we have done in many years against our old rivals.
With some frantic calculations going on we knew that 2 wins would see us into the final and we started well with a 1-0 win over the other Scarborough Ladies team (blue), after Emily scored a re-taken penalty to secure the win.
So, a win against Kirbymoorside would give us the place in the final, with a draw not being good enough as a result of our goal difference. We started the game strongly and had several chances in the first 5 minutes which we dominated, but the 'keeper made a couple of good saves from both Chloe and Emily and as Scotton pushed hard for the win with Fay and Honor both pushing further forward, we were hit on the break with a 2 against 2 and the Kirbymoorside striker made no mistake leaving Sam with little chance.
With just 3 minutes left in the short game format we had no choice but to push everyone forward but Kirbymoorside kept the ball well and with virtually the last action of the game they once again broke and made it 2-0.
So we missed out on the final, but also missed out on the afternoon rain and a good season closed with a very good performance from all of the girls in the tournament.
