After a shaky start to the season, Scotton got back to
winning ways on their away trip to Wetherby.
The girls settled in quickly and within five minutes Hannah had opened
up the scoring with her first goal of the season. Soon after, Ellie Mc drew the Wetherby
defence out wide with a mazy run before sending a low cross into the box, which
found Danielle and the back of the net.
Scotton kept on the pressure and Anya, who was making quite an
impression in midfield, put away Scotton’s third goal. Wetherby recovered well and played some neat
passing football to take the ball deep into the Scotton half, but were held off
brilliantly by Katie and Ellie C in defence.
Scotton finished off the first half with a long range effort from
Danielle, and Anya showing her strength in the box as she powered through the
Wetherby defence to get her second goal of the day. Half-time, Wetherby 0 - 5 Scotton.
The second half saw Amber come into defence and Ellie L take
a place in midfield. Wetherby came out a
lot stronger and soon tested Jade in goal, who had to make a couple of stops to
maintain our five goal margin. Ellie L
showed what a determined player she is with some great runs up the wing, and
some nice link up play with Ellie Mc, who was a constant threat to the Wetherby
defence, and but for a bobble on the pitch could have extended Scotton’s lead.
Half way through the second half, Katie who was now playing
in midfield found herself unmarked on the edge of the box and struck the ball
beautifully first time leaving the keeper with no chance and finding the top
left corner, taking Scotton’s tally to six.
Wetherby didn’t give up and pressed forward to win a couple of corners,
but Jade took command of her defence and some good work by Amber and Ellie C
saw off the threat. Scotton countered
and won a corner of their own, and Danielle’s in-swinger was met by the Wetherby
keeper who was unable to hold on to the ball, which spilled across the goal
line. Final score Wetherby 0 - 7
Scotton.
It was a great result for the girls, who all worked their
socks off. It was encouraging to see
players out of their usual positions making such an impact, and goals seemingly
coming from all over the pitch. And to
keep a clean sheet showed how our defensive play is coming along too. Player of the match went to Ellie Mc whose
skills on the ball are never in doubt, but today she showed what a great team
player she can be and her clean passing, movement off the ball and great
communication were key to Scotton’s excellent performance. Well done Ellie!
