In our last game
of the season we travelled across to Ilkley Town FC to face newly crowned Girls
under 12 League Champions Knaresborough Celtic in the league Cup Final.
In a very tight and competitive match both sides worked hard to create
chances however despite the game being end to end in the first half few clear
cut chances were created. All our
players worked extremely hard and were successful in closing Celtic down and
giving them no opportunity to get there normal passing game going.
In midfield in particular
some hard running from Skipper Dani supported ably by Ellie C and Emily on
either side all snapping into countless tackles made life difficult for Celtic.
Anya and Katie looking particularly strong
at the back and when Celtic did break though Grace continued her recent excellent
form to keep the scores level.
0-0 at half time.
In the second half
Ellie C came off and Amy came on and slotted in seamlessly – again we were working
incredibly hard to impose ourselves on a very good Celtic side. As the game
progressed in the 2nd half it became a little more open with both
keepers being called into action. The deadlock was broken when Emily worked
herself some space on the wing and delivered an accurate cross to striker
Hannah who drilled a shot into the bottom left hand corner to put us 1-0 in
front. We had a chance to go further ahead when Hannah again smartly turned
her defender and hit the post – so close but so far!
Celtic came back
strongly pushing hard to find the equaliser and were rewarded for their efforts
by being awarded a penalty with 5 minutes to go. Fortunately for us the
resulting penalty crashed onto the bar and was cleared to safety. Celtic
continued to look for the equaliser but our defence well marshalled by player
of the match Katie held firm.
At the final whistle
the roar that went up was incredibly loud with parents and grandparents etc rushing
onto the pitch to celebrate together with the players.
After a great
performance last week in the Killinghall tournament where we came out winners
it was great to carry the form on and win the cup in the final game of the season against the run away league winners, Celtic. A fantastic result!
It was very much a
squad effort to lift the cup and a special mention to Ellie Mac, Ellie L and
Issy that whilst not making it onto the pitch in the final contributed fully in
the proceeding rounds and made a huge positive contribution during our cup run.
From all the GU12 coaches
